Art Director

9 Story is looking for an experienced Art Director to join our team for an upcoming Production. The Art Director will work closely with the production Director to create the overall feel and colour of the series.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work with the Director and the Funpack Artist to go through the script in order to make creative calls and flag areas of concern;
  • Assist with colour direction and create colour keys to be approved by the Director/Client;
  • Oversee and approve Funpack designs, ensuring that they are on style and can technically fit into the animation; 
  • Collaborate with background, design and layout teams to reflect creative vision and goals, ensuring that the teams are working to schedule; and ensure that they are staying on schedule
  • Plan the workflow against pre-set deadlines and schedules;
  • Help to define the team's standards and practices. 

INDIVIDUAL SKILLS:

  • 4+ years of experience working as an Art Director within an animation environment;
  • Demonstrated understanding of drawing, colour and design theories; 
  • Working knowledge of Photoshop, Harmony;
  • Understanding of the 2D animation pipeline and inter-departmental workflows;
  • Excited about learning new things, you’re organized and execute on tasks efficiently;
  • Able to proactively recognize challenges and flag them as necessary;
  • Superior communication skills, able to work autonomously and in a team setting;
  • Excellent problem solving skills, with superior agility navigating multiple priorities and/or difficult situations;
  • Professional and friendly with a flexible attitude;

Texture & Surfacing Artist

The Texture & Surfacing Artist is responsible for UV, texture, and developing shading to be used in Production.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively in a team environment to create a strong visual balance, aligned to the show outline and expectations;
  • Maintain project standards for naming and organizing textures, shading, and shading networks;
  • Stay up-to-date on new tools and improvements needed for textures and surfacing;
  • Deliver on tasks in alignment with tight timelines and scheduling requirements.

Role Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of experience as a Texture & Surfacing Artist;
  • Portfolio that demonstrates well thought out UVs with strong visual appeal;
  • Experience with the animated TV series pipeline;
  • Superior knowledge of 3D texturing tools (Maya and Zbrush) as well as Photoshop and rendering software;
  • Strong communication skills, able to work autonomously and in a team setting;
  • Excellent problem solving skills, with superior agility navigating multiple priorities and/or difficult situations;
  • Professional and friendly with a flexible attitude;

Production Manager

REPORTS TO: Producer

CONTRACT TYPE: Full-Time


ROLE OVERVIEW:


The Production Manager works closely with the Producer and production team to provide support as needed, ensuring coordination of the daily workflow of production materials at each stage of the production. Acts as a liaison between Producer, Director and crew, and works with the Creative Director to communicate creative priorities throughout the productions as required.


ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensure coordination of the daily workflow of production materials (ex. Scripts, storyboards, animatics, designs etc.);
  • Facilitate interdepartmental communication with all crew and freelancers;
  • Ensure all departments have the appropriate production assets and infrastructure in order to successfully execute in their roles and according to schedule;
  • Log and track all production activities and distributed materials, ensuring prompt distribution of production correspondence to internal and external clients/personnel (e-mail, courier, fax, etc.);
  • Review clearance and standard & practice reports to determine any required changes;
  • Maintain distribution and contact lists, credit beds etc.;
  • Attend creative review and approval sessions to help determine their impact on production;
  • Work closely with the Producer to propose solutions to any production challenges;
  • Support script coordination and preparation of record draft scripts, final production draft scripts, fine cut scripts;
  • Attend recording sessions and provide support in casting, record preparation and attendance;
  • Support design coordination, list, reviews, approvals and assignments;
  • Provide assistance with revisions/animation coordinating.

INDIVIDUAL SKILLS:

  • 4+ years of experience in same or similar role;
  • Strong understanding of the 2D animation pipeline;
  • Able to proactively recognize challenges, flag them to the Producer and provide possible solutions;
  • Strong understanding of the production ecosystem and deadlines;
  • Level-headed when working against tight timelines;
  • Support team to achieve their goals, leveraging coaching and performance best practices;
  • Able to identify areas of improvement within the pipeline, working with the Technical Director to find appropriate solutions;
  • Sound judgment and discretion while managing sensitive, confidential information.
  • Superior communication skills, able to work autonomously and in a team setting.
  • Excellent problem solving skills, with superior agility navigating multiple priorities and/or difficult situations.
  • Ability to influence and drive results, building relationships with both staff and leadership.

Senior Harmony Designer

 

Reporting to the Design Supervisor, the Designer will work with the design and rigging team to meet deadlines.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with Designer Supervisor in regards to design assignments.
  • Review animatic’s to ensure continuity of character and prop designs.
  • Follows the designs created by the Fun Pack Artist and recreates them in the appropriate software, when no design is available the designer will create it within the style and model of the show
  • Creates assets in the show style and on model,
  • Creates mouth charts, blinks, hands, feet, body parts and other assets in the show style and model
  • Design additional rotations or poses for character and prop designs
  • Work with VFX artist to design additional elements needed in the effect
  • Insert basic Breaks/Rigs into designs, and test to ensure that it can move as needed
  • Address all client and internal notes via the trackers, makes required changes or revisions and re-submits for approval.  
  • Communicates with Design Supervisor regarding status of work and any problems that may arise.
  • Complete work on schedule and maintain deadlines assigned

 

Requirements:

  • 4+ years of experience Designing and Rigging in Harmony (experience with version 12 is ideal)
  • The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of Animation, Effect, Colour and other aspects of the production pipeline.
  • Able to draw on model and style, maintaining consistent proportions and volumes
  • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
  • Excellent Communication Skills both written and verbal

Rigging Supervisor

9 Story Media Group is looking for a Toon Boom Rigging Supervisor to oversee the rigging department for its TV production pipeline and to provide direct and daily support to current TV Productions.

 Role Responsibilities:

  • Oversee team of Riggers across multiple productions;
  • Lead the improvement of the work flow and ensure functionality of character and prop designs;
  • Develop common practices for breaking and Rigging provided animation designs;
  • Works closely with Design, Animation, Scene Planning and Pipeline departments to create and troubleshoot complex or challenging rigs;
  • Assist the layout supervisors in creating dynamic, multi planning backgrounds;
  • Work with and advise the posing department in the creation of novel poses based on storyboards;
  • Provide advice and guidance to implement process improvements.

 Job Requirements:
  • 4+ years’ experience in varied productions with Toon Boom Harmony Stage v10+;
  • Extensive knowledge of Toon Boom with the ability to creatively problem solve;
  • Management experience in a fast paced studio environment considered an asset;
  • Formal Certification(s) from Toon Boom Inc. (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Associate, Master) a bonus;
  • Able to work within restrictive timelines and project milestones.
  • Excellent communication skills, able to develop, achieve buy-in from multiple stakeholders and roll out new processes;
  • Professional and friendly with a flexible attitude;

Talent Manager

ROLE OVERVIEW
Working in a dynamic and creative business environment, the Talent Manager is responsible for the full- cycle recruitment and onboarding for 9 Story Media Group’s Production environment, as well as the internal resource management program.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
Resource Management:
The objective of the Resource Management portion of this role is to manage our internal talent pool to align individual skills and preferences with client project needs, as well as the overall financial objectives of the business.


1.Assignment of Resources

  • Proactive management of staff availability, including communication to all relevant partners as necessary.
  • Ensuring compliance with staffing allocation process against project needs and business objectives.

2.Resource Management
  • Maintain knowledge of current and upcoming projects, staff skills base, historical experience, preferences and development needs to ensure appropriate allocation of staff resources to specific projects. 
  • Work with line managers to coordinate and roll-out training to further develop internal resources, supporting career development and the updating of project-based skill requirements.
  • Maintenance of all provided resource data.

3.Reporting
  • Analyze resource usage and productivity reports, and provide recommendations on appropriate action plans or required activities.
  • Preparation and/or review of ad-hoc reporting requests from VP Production.
  • Responsible for monthly resource reporting, including headcount, consistently ensuring data integrity.

Talent Management:
The Talent Management portion of this role is geared towards full- cycle recruitment and onboarding of external talent.

  • Initiate and drive dynamic talent attraction strategies to attract highly skilled artists;
  • Source and identify qualified candidates for open positions at 9 Story Media Group;
  • Partner with HR and hiring managers to identify role requirements, selection process, timelines and approach;
  • Participate as an active member of the interview team;
  • Consult with business to understand the external market and related hiring trends for talent, any metrics and issues, and possible talent implications resulting from shifts within the industry;

 INDIVIDUAL SKILLS
  • 3 years of talent acquisition experience required, preferably in an animation/creative environment.
  • 1-2 years of internal resource planning preferred.
  • Superior communication skills, able to facilitate and negotiate in staffing discussions.
  • Tact and diplomacy in dealing with sensitive and confidential issues.
  • Excellent judgment and strong problem solving skills, with superior agility navigating multiple priorities and/or difficult situations.
  • Ability to influence and drive results at all levels of an organization, building relationships with both staff and senior leadership. 
  • Professional, friendly, customer-centric with a flexible attitude and a good sense of humour.
  • Computer literacy and advanced knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite, as well as Gmail and Google applications.
