9 STORY ENTERTAINMENT SECURES RIGHTS TO DEVELOP
TISH COHEN'S SENSATIONAL THE INVISIBLE RULES OF THE ZOE LAMA
LIVE-ACTION SERIES BASED ON BEST-SELLING TWEEN GIRLS' BOOK
T0 BE DEVELOPED FOR TELEVISION
Toronto, CA - OCTOBER 01, 2008
Award-winning production and distribution company, 9 Story Entertainment, has secured the rights to adapt féted Canadian novelist Tish Cohen's best-selling young adult book, The Invisible Rules of The Zoë Lama, into a live-action television series. The announcement was made by 9 Story Entertainment CEO, Vince Commisso.
The Invisible Rules of the Zoë Lama tells the story of the confident and compassionate seventh-grader, Zoë Costello, who is the school's go-to-girl for anything, a coveted position she has held since kindergarten, when Zoë neutralized the jungle-gym bully. Dispensing advice to her grade seven "clients," a.k.a. classmates, teachers and friends, on everything from fashion to organizing class photos, Zoë knows her rules, or as she prefers to call them, her unwritten rules. One of the most important unwritten rules: Never Question Zoë's Advice. When a new girl with a "reputation," arrives at school, Zoë's efforts to help her fit in completely backfire and her own never-to-be-questioned advice becomes questionable., Ultimately, Zoë faces some difficult truths, gaining new perspective and appreciation for what matters most.
"Tish Cohen is an enormous talent. The vibrant, genuine characters she creates in her literary work translate wonderfully to the screen. The stories and situations are easily relatable to young viewers and their families.. We are thrilled to partner with this celebrated author as 9 Story continues to build its slate of high profile, live-action projects," said Commisso.
Considered to be one of Canada's hottest up-and-coming authors, Tish Cohen's books are garnering enormous attention across the border in the US, especially in the Hollywood community. Her debut novel, Town House, is currently being developed by Fox Studios (with Scott Free Productions) for a theatrical feature to be directed by Oscar-winning director John Carney ("Once"). Golden Globe-nominee Doug Wright ("Quills") is adapting the script. Advance word on Cohen's new novel, Inside Out Girl, is being touted by US retail giant, Target, as an already, "breakout book."
Notes Commisso, "We jumped on the opportunity to work with Tish and be part of her growing success, both here and in the US. We are very excited to be bringing Zoë Lama's contemporary, funny and poignant stories to television."
